Pecos Bills Fall One Game Short of Playoffs in 2026

The Pecos Bills wrapped up their 2026 season just one game short of qualifying for the Pecos League playoffs. Pecos remained in the Mountain Division postseason race deep into the final portion of the schedule, making nearly every game important as the Bills battled for a playoff position.

The season got off to an unusual start as Ryan Germany took over as field manager following the second game of the season. Germany assumed control beginning with the third game and managed the Bills for the remainder of the summer. Under Germany, Pecos stayed competitive and remained in the playoff picture until the end of the season.

One of the biggest stories of the 2026 Pecos Bills was the outstanding season of Anthony Hampton. Hampton was a major force at the top of the Pecos lineup and was one of the team's most consistent offensive players throughout the summer. He played 45 games and hit .427 with 82 hits in 192 at bats. Hampton scored 61 runs, collected 23 doubles, five triples and two home runs while driving in 39 runs. He was also a major threat on the bases with 53 stolen bases and finished the season with a 1.126 OPS.

Hampton's ability to get on base, create runs and put pressure on opposing defenses was a major part of the Bills offense. Whether it was collecting an extra-base hit or immediately becoming a stolen-base threat after reaching first, Hampton gave Pecos an offensive weapon throughout the 2026 season.

On the pitching side, Phillip Jones put together an excellent season for the Bills and became an important part of the Pecos starting rotation. Jones gave Pecos something every independent baseball team needs: innings from a starting pitcher. His ability to work deep into games was highlighted by his complete-game performances during the season.

Jones' complete games were especially valuable to the Bills. In a league where pitching staffs can be tested by long stretches of games and limited days off, having a starter capable of taking the ball and finishing what he started was a major advantage. Jones consistently gave Pecos an opportunity to compete and established himself as one of the team's most dependable pitchers during the 2026 campaign.

The Bills also received strong offensive production from Derrick Cancel, who hit .409 over 42 games with 70 hits and 40 RBIs. Juan Avila hit .415 in 29 games and scored 35 runs, while Ryan Drag supplied power in the lineup, hitting .345 with six home runs and 37 RBIs.

Pecos spent much of the summer battling Mountain Division opponents including the Tucson Saguaros, Roswell Invaders and Alpine Cowboys. As the schedule moved into its final weeks, the Bills continued to have an opportunity to qualify for the postseason.

The Bills recorded several important victories down the stretch. Pecos defeated Roswell 9-7 and later earned a 5-1 victory over the Invaders. The Bills also recorded an important 3-2 victory against Tucson during the playoff race. The season concluded with a difficult four-game trip to Alpine, where Pecos dropped the first three games before closing the 2026 campaign with a 7-6 victory over the Cowboys.

In the end, the difference between extending the season and going home was only one game. The Bills missed the playoffs by a single game, making the close losses and missed opportunities throughout the summer even more significant.

Despite falling short of the postseason, the 2026 season featured several major positives for Pecos. Germany took over the club just three games into the season and kept the Bills in the playoff race, Hampton delivered an excellent offensive season, and Jones provided the pitching staff with quality starts, valuable innings and complete-game performances.

The Bills finished 2026 knowing just how small the margin can be in a playoff race. One additional victory would have changed the outcome of the season. Pecos will enter 2027 looking to build on the performances of players such as Anthony Hampton and Phillip Jones and turn a one-game playoff miss into a return to the Pecos League postseason.
